The Internet “apparently” is very keen to see Cumberbatch as a big-screen Stephen Strange but it probably is not to be, he says. “I don’t know if the Internet can manage my schedule and Marvel’s, but if they can, good luck to the Internet.”
Cumberbatch, who is at Comic-Con for Penguins of Madagascar (in which he voices a superspy wolf) and presumably also for The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (where he voices the Necromancer and the dragon Smaug), feels that Strange is “a great character.”
The bad news: A major stumbling block is Cumberbatch signed on for 12 weeks of Shakespeare’s Hamlet next summer at London’s Barbican theater, “and I can’t move the play,” he says. “You’ve got to do that within a certain amount of time just to be fair on the culture. If you announce that you’re going to do it, you need to stick to that because other people are waiting to do theirs.”
Cumberbatch is excited to get back to the stage with director Lindsey Turner’s take on Hamlet. He wanted it to be a true collaboration between the two of them, he says, and Turner told him she wanted “to treat it like it’s a new play that’s just arrived at the Royal Court Theatre and you can question the writer as if he’s in the room.”
There’s also some Shakespeare on TV for him, too. When he’s back in London, Cumberbatch will be playing Richard III for BBC2 in a continuation of the Hollow Crownseries. The actor stars as the character in Henry VI Part 1 and 2 as well as Richard III.
Getting to “play Richard all through the Henrys” is a real treat, Cumberbatch says. “It’s a nice run when you really get to understand why this disabled son of these athletic Kennedy-esque jock guys is slowly festering his resentment and why he sets his sights on the crown at the cost of everything in his path.
"You don’t just get the slight wink of a psychopath at the beginning of ‘Now is the Winter of our discontent.’ You know what’s come before, you know who it is saying that, so I’m really thrilled to bring that version of the character to the screen." [x]
